Summary

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” That quote encapsulates the biting satire contained within Animal Farm, by George Orwell. This allegorical novel tells the story of a pack of animals, led by pigs Snowball and Napoleon, which take over their farm. What starts as a powerful revolution soon devolves in to a harsh dictatorship. This allegory aligns with the story of the Russian revolution and subsequent Stalinist regime. Animal Farm is an excellent choice for demonstrating the concept of allegory, or as a supplemental material for students learning about the Russian revolution.
